A carriage clock is a small, spring-driven clock, designed for travelling, developed in the early 19th century in France. The first carriage clock was invented by Abraham-Louis Breguet for the Emperor Napoleon in 1812.
The origins of the carriage clock can be traced back to a clock created for Napoleon at the close of the 18th century. The great French clockmaker, Abraham Louis Breguet, produced a pendule d’officier (‘officer’s clock’) for the military leader.
There is little doubt that the first French carriage clock bearing any resemblance to the form in which we know it today was made in Paris in the first quarter of the 19th century by the greatest watchmaker ever to have lived, Abraham Louis Breguet.
