History. Native American history. Local Native American groups had lived in the Hillsborough area for thousands of years by the time Spanish explorers entered the region. The Great Indian Trading Path, used by generations of Native Americans, crossed the Eno River in this area.
The town was a center of political and cultural activity during the 18th and 19th centuries. Several governors lived in town, as did a signer of the Declaration of Independence, William Hooper, whose house still stands. The state’s Constitutional Convention and five sessions of the General Assembly were held here between 1778 and 1784.
New Continental commander Maj. Gen. Horatio Gates arrived in Hillsborough from the North in July. The Virginia militia was camped here, but the other remains of the army were scattered around North Carolina. Gates and the militia moved off to Cox’s Mill near Ramseur, where he gathered the army only to lead it to a terrible defeat in South Carolina.
William Hooper lived and died in Hillsborough. He was first buried in the Old Town Cemetery; however, don’t be surprised if you can’t find his grave.

The Occaneechi people lived in what is now Virginia and North Carolina. While disease and warfare greatly diminished the Occaneechi population, many descendants of the tribe continued to live in Hillsborough.
