May 10, 2024 · Who’s the best safety in the league, and who makes up the top 32 at the position? Here are PFN’s NFL safety rankings heading into next season. Offense: QB | RB | WR | TE
- Derwin James. LAC • FS • #3. Derwin James reigns as the NFL's top safety because he can do anything and everything a coach could ask out of a player at the position.
- Minkah Fitzpatrick. PIT • FS • #39. Minkah Fitzpatrick is the NFL's prototypical free safety: a true centerfielder who is adept in coverage and makes opposing quarterbacks pay with their mistakes in turnovers.
- Justin Simmons. DEN • FS • #31. Justin Simmons is as reliable as it gets, logging either All-Pro (three-time second-teamer in 2019, 2021, and 2022) or Pro Bowl (2020) honors in each of the last four seasons.
- Budda Baker. ARI • SS • #3. Budda Baker is as good as gets among strong safeties in the NFL. He totaled the fourth-highest run-stop rate (6.1%) and ranked third in tackles at or behind the line of scrimmage (eight) among safeties in 2022.
- Derwin James, Los Angeles Chargers. James is the league’s most dynamic playmaker at safety. There isn’t a better combination of run defense (75.3 grade), coverage (74.5) and pass rush (90.9).
- Minkah Fitzpatrick, Pittsburgh Steelers. The centerpiece of the Steelers' secondary, Fitzpatrick had an excellent 2022 season after a disappointing 2021.
- Kevin Byard, Tennessee Titans. Byard is as pure a free safety as there is in the NFL. While his 79.5 overall grade and 81.0 coverage grade weren’t the best of his career, they still were top-10 marks in the NFL in 2022.
- Antoine Winfield Jr., Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Winfield's coverage grade (67.0) took a dip in 2022, but he still served as the enforcer in Tampa Bay’s defense.
