- Derwin James. LAC • FS • #3. Derwin James reigns as the NFL's top safety because he can do anything and everything a coach could ask out of a player at the position.
- Minkah Fitzpatrick. PIT • FS • #39. Minkah Fitzpatrick is the NFL's prototypical free safety: a true centerfielder who is adept in coverage and makes opposing quarterbacks pay with their mistakes in turnovers.
- Justin Simmons. DEN • FS • #31. Justin Simmons is as reliable as it gets, logging either All-Pro (three-time second-teamer in 2019, 2021, and 2022) or Pro Bowl (2020) honors in each of the last four seasons.
- Budda Baker. ARI • SS • #3. Budda Baker is as good as gets among strong safeties in the NFL. He totaled the fourth-highest run-stop rate (6.1%) and ranked third in tackles at or behind the line of scrimmage (eight) among safeties in 2022.
- Ryan Neal, Seattle Seahawks (85.6) In what is likely the most out-of-nowhere performance of the 2022 NFL season, Neal stepped into a starting role in Week 5 after Jamal Adams’ season ended in Week 1 and after Josh Jones, who originally replaced Adams, wasn’t up to snuff as an NFL starter in the three games that preceded Neal taking over.
- Minkah Fitzpatrick, Pittsburgh Steelers (82.4) Fitzpatrick followed up an offseason where he became one of the league’s highest-paid safeties with a career year in terms of PFF grades, including top-eight marks in run defense (82.2) and coverage (83.3).
- Tyrann Mathieu, New Orleans Saints (81.2) Mathieu played all 17 games in his 10th NFL season, and first season with his new team in New Orleans, for a career-high 1,128 defensive snaps (sixth), which moves him further up this list than his final grades rank him.
- Kamren Curl, Washington Commanders (82.9) Curl has provided an incredible return on investment for the Commanders after being a seventh-round pick in 2020.
Nov 2, 2023 · Fitzpatrick was once again voted as the top safety in the league by The Associated Press, repeating his No. 1 spot from the preseason. A panel of nine AP Pro Football Writers ranked the top five players at safety, making their selections based on current status through Week 8. First-place votes were worth 10 points.
