Svein is based on Svein Knutsson, the son of Cnut the Great and his first wife Ælfgifu of Northampton. In 1030 Cnut sent Ælfgifu and Svein as regents to rule Norway. Their rule was considered oppressive by the Norwegian because they imposed new taxes and harsh laws. They were expelled in 1034.
