Aug 28, 2020 · Brixton history: St Matthew’s church in old photos and Victorian and Edwardian postcards. A Brixton landmark since it was consecrated in 1824, St Matthew’s was one of four new Lambeth parish churches built in response to the growing population in the early 19th century.
St Matthew’s Church is an enormous Victorian building in the centre of Brixton at the heart of a conservation area. It is another of the ‘Waterloo’ churches. During the 1970’s and 1980’s the interior was significantly but insensitively re-ordered to provide a range of community facilities.
