On the day appointed to meet Bobby Hebb, the three of us assembled in a dingy basement rehearsal room in Denmark Street, London’s Tin Pan Alley. A small charismatic looking black man suddenly descended the stairs, carrying a huge wad of sheet music under his arm.
A monster that is DEEP PURPLE wouldn’t be as massive if not for the band’s first line-up’s heavy leanings of bassist Nick Simper and a certain guitar player. But once Simper was out of it, only a few people have followed his career which produced so much great music.
Nicholas Simper was born in Southall, London, on November 3, 1945. Nick joined his first school group The Renegades in 1960, using a guitar given to him by his father. On leaving school Nick joined The Delta Five and occasionally depped with Lord Sutch's Savages, where he met Ritchie Blackmore.
