Mohsen Ramat is a former diplomat, who studied political science at university. Following the Soviet invasion, Afghan Civil War, and takeover by the Taliban, he is unemployed. Mohsen is an educated man.
Mohsen Ramat does not like public executions. He doesn't like anything that the Taliban have instituted, their "new normal" in Kabul. Despite this, there is something in him that makes him want to join in when he sees a prostitute being stoned to death at the marketplace.
In the crowd, Mohsen Ramat, a former intellectual, joins the crowd, feeling exhilarated when one of the stones he throws hits the woman in the head. Atiq visits his former commander in the military, Mirza Shah, who offers to involve Atiq in black-market deals.
