Kenneth Bancroft Clark (July 24, 1914 – May 1, 2005) [1] and Mamie Phipps Clark (April 18, 1917 – August 11, 1983) [2] were American psychologists who as a married team conducted research among children and were active in the Civil Rights Movement.
Psychologists Kenneth Bancroft Clark and his wife, Mamie Phipps Clark, designed the “Doll Study” as a test to measure the psychological effects of segregation on black children.
Not long after, she met her soon-to-be husband, Kenneth Clark, who partnered with her to extend her thesis research on self-identification in black children. This work was later developed into the famous doll experiments that exposed internalized racism and the negative effects of segregation for African-American children (Butler, 2009).
At Howard University, Mamie Phipps Clark met her future husband, Kenneth Bancroft Clark, who was a master's degree student in psychology. It was Kenneth Clark who urged her to pursue psychology because it would allow her to explore her interest in working with children.
Mamie Clark died from cancer in 1983 and although she remained the lesser-known component of the Clark research team, her professional explorations and significant personal demeanor should not be overlooked.
