He dreamed of becoming general manager, but was told it was impossible after he had lost a leg in an Officer Training Corps exercise at the age of 15.
Against this backdrop of latent railway interest and dearth of entertainment, was a lowly Southern Railway employee by the name of Ian Allan. Allan worked in the publications department and part of his job was to answer enquiries from the public on various things to do with SR’s locomotives.
Ian Allan was a prolific publisher of Transport Books between 1943 and 2016, initially primarily for Train, Bus, Aircraft and Ship Spotters but eventually expanding into a vast number of series for Transport Enthusiasts in general.
