Homan Potterton (9 May 1946 – 8 December 2020) [1] was an art historian and writer who was director of the National Gallery of Ireland, 1980-88. [1] At 33, he was the youngest ever director of the gallery. [2] He was previously (1974–80) an assistant keeper, curator, at the National Gallery, London. [1]

In the 1960s, Homan Potterton, who had been brought from the George Bernard Shaw Fund, Potterton bought up in rural County Meath, studied art history in Trinity College, Dublin where lectures by Anne Crookshank encouraged him towards his chosen career.
Homan Potterton was the youngest ever Director of the National Gallery of Ireland, appointed at just 34, but despite his youth was eminently qualified and made a huge contribution to the institution.
He was editor of the Irish Arts Review from 1995-2002 and, in later years, he divided his time between London and the south of France. Rest in peace. The sad death of Homan Potterton recalls his achievements as the director of the National Gallery of Ireland.
