Homan Potterton (9 May 1946 – 8 December 2020) [1] was an art historian and writer who was director of the National Gallery of Ireland, 1980-88. [1] At 33, he was the youngest ever director of the gallery. [2] He was previously (1974–80) an assistant keeper, curator, at the National Gallery, London. [1]
Dec 13, 2020 · Homan Franklyn Potterton died in London last Tuesday at the age of 74. A memorial service will be held in St Patrick's Cathedral, Trim at a later date yet to be announced.

In the 1960s, Homan Potterton, who had been brought from the George Bernard Shaw Fund, Potterton bought up in rural County Meath, studied art history in Trinity College, Dublin where lectures by Anne Crookshank encouraged him towards his chosen career.
Homan Potterton was the youngest ever Director of the National Gallery of Ireland, appointed at just 34, but despite his youth was eminently qualified and made a huge contribution to the institution.
