- GIOVANNI DI SIMONE (active 1260-1284 in Pisa) Biography Italian architect. He is credited with the design of the Campo Santo and the church of San Francesco, both in Pisa. He died in 1284, when Pisa suffered a defeat in the naval battle of Meloria against the Genoans.

Giovanni di Simone was the engineer in charge of resuming the construction of the Tower in 1272. Although he received many critiques for not having straightened the Tower at the time, he successfully managed to bring the whole construction from 3 to 7 tiers.
The real identity of Tower of Pisa’s architects is a mystery. The most accredited architects of this first phase of work are Bonanno Pisano and Gherardo din Gherardo. The second phase of construction started in 1275, and the work is attributed to Giovani di Simone.
