The Inspector Montalbano (Italian: Il commissario Montalbano [il kommisˈsaːrjo montalˈbaːno]) television series are Italian police procedural stories. Based on Andrea Camilleri's detective novels, they are located in the imaginary town of Vigàta, Sicily, which is based on Camilleri's native Porto Empedocle.

However, stardom arrived with his leading role as Commissario Salvo Montalbano, in the Inspector Montalbano series of TV films, initially shown on RAI Two, and then RAI One, as well as many other European TV channels and SBS in Australia. The series, which started running from 1999 and is still ongoing, consists of 36 films through 2020.
He is the chief of the police station (Italian: Commissario) of the fictional town of Vigata. In this role he is balancing between the demands of his superiors and the realities of local crime and life in general; in fact, a determining factor of his success as a Sicilian policeman seems to be his ability to bridge between different cultures.
Detective Montalbano. Commissioner Montalbano works in Vigata, Montelusa province with Deputy Commissioner Augello and Inspector Fazio, in each episode Montalbano solves complicated cases with his characteristic cunning in a rural Sicily ruled by the mafia.
