Founded in 1925 by Mary Stewart Carey with the help of Indianapolis civic leaders and organizations, it is the fourth-oldest such institution in the world. The current site became home for the museum in 1946; the current building was constructed in 1976 and has had four major expansions since then.
After a visit to the Brooklyn Children’s Museum in 1925, Mary Stewart Carey founded The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis (TCM) with the help of other like-minded civic leaders. With no collections or staff, the museum made its first home in the Propylaeum’s carriage house.
In April 1925—Just a few months after her memorable visit—Mrs. Carey convened a meeting of like-minded people gathered at her home. This led to the formation of The Children’s Museum Association of Indianapolis, which led to the creation of a constitution, a set of bylaws, and a board of trustees. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis was founded in 1925 through the stewardship and inspiration of Mary Stewart Carey (1859–1938), a citizen of Indianapolis. With the help of several civic-minded women and contributions from children in nearby neighborhoods, the museum sprang to life.
