In the opening scene of the film, Paul Hanganu (Mimi Brănescu), whose hair is slightly graying, but whose body has retained its youthful vigor, follows, with some amusement, the playful ruminations of his slim, blonde lover, Raluca (Maria Popistasu).
Irulan wants to be a true wife, and to bear Paul's children, but Paul denies her; he wants only to be true to Chani. This is a major point of conflict between Paul and Irulan. With these spoilers in mind, it's unlikely that their relationship contributed anything to her research.
While Paul loves both women, Raluca tells him what he already knows: that he must choose. When he says to his wife that he is in love with Raluca, she orders him to move out and to say nothing to Mara.
