The eldest son of John Fry (d. 1775) of Sutton Benger, Wiltshire, author of Select Poems (1774), Fry was educated in the north of England. He was bound as an apprentice to Henry Portsmouth of Basingstoke, a doctor, and married Anna, Portsmouth's daughter.
He did however leave a significant legacy to his niece Margery Fry which enabled her to undertake significant work on prison reform, following in the footsteps of her great-aunt Elizabeth Fry (nee Gurney, who had married a nephew of Joseph Storrs Fry I in 1800).

In 1799 she married Joseph Fry (1777-1861), a banker in London, with whom she had eleven children. Elizabeth Fry became a Quaker minister in 1810.
