Johnstown Castle 1810-1855 Following the mid seventeenth century Cromwellian Wars, the estate and castle were confiscated from the Catholic Esmondes, changing hands a number of times before being acquired in 1692 by John Grogan, a Wexford merchant of English origin.
In the 19th-century, the Grogan family re-imagined and remodelled the castle with a romantic, neo-Gothic design – delivered with the help of Daniel Robertson, who also shaped the gardens at the Powerscourt Estate.
Under its leadership, the Johnstown Castle Estate began its journey towards becoming a visitor attraction. In 1974, Dr Austin O’Sullivan began collecting materials relating to farming and rural life in Ireland, and the Irish Agricultural Museum was opened in the estate’s farm buildings by President Patrick Hillery in 1979.
