The Grand Organ of Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral has recently undergone urgent restoration works. The project, which involved removing, cleaning and restoring each of its 4565 individual pipes, took 18 months to complete at a cost of over £1 million.
Along with being one of the UK’s most important examples of mid-20th century English organ building, the organ plays an integral role in Cathedral life and worship. It was built by the English organ builders J W Walker & Sons Ltd and its distinctive façade was designed by the Cathedral architect Sir Frederick Gibberd.
The organ, built by Henry Willis & Sons, is the largest pipe organ in the UK, and one of the largest musical instruments in the world.
