  1. Feb 20, 2022 · The first game on the list, Troy, is one of the safest Total War games and as a result is one of the most disappointing games in the Total War series.

    • Three Kingdoms (2019) It's hard to understate the impact that Three Kingdoms has had on Total War. Diplomacy has always been a sore subject for many players, and something that Creative Assembly has never gotten quite right in the series.
    • Shogun 2 (2011) There are other games on this list with more units, greater scope, and grander settings, but Shogun 2 is Creative Assembly at its cohesive best.
    • Warhammer 2 (2017) While Total War: Warhammer was an excellent game, its sequel manages to surpass it in terms of creating an even more epic experience grounded in the lore of Warhammer Fantasy.
    • Medieval 2 (2006) Medieval 2 owes an unquestionable debt to the games that came before it, but it has something magical that sets it apart from its predecessors.
    • Total War: Shogun 2 (2011) This is by far my favorite Total War game and it’s because I think it’s the best in the series. They took their first game, Shogun: Total War and upgraded the graphics, combat, diplomacy and every little thing.
    • Medieval II: Total War (2006) For the longest amount of time, Medieval 2: Total War was my favorite Total War game. There was so much to like about it, from the huge map you have, being all of Europe and some other places too.
    • Total War: Warhammer III (2022) This was a good game without the other two games, don’t get me wrong. Total War: Warhammer III gives huge upgrades to the demonic factions and gives players their own avatar to really do damage.
    • Total War: Rome II (2013) I personally did not enjoy Total War: Rome II as much as everyone else because I got the definitive edition. This gave me so many playable factions that it took forever for my turn.
    • Total War: Warhammer III - 2022 (Windows, macOS, Linux) The culmination of the Warhammer series, this is the final installment of the title, and this can be considered CA’s magnum opus.
    • Shogun 2: Total War - 2011 (Windows, macOS, Linux) "Beauty and harmony, all that begins must end... the reign of the old shogunate is over!" In my opinion, the best Total War, the most polished, complete, and balanced.
    • Total War: Warhammer II - 2017 (Windows, macOS, Linux) A direct follow-up to the success of Warhammer I with the same formula but tremendously expanding the game by adding more factions like Lizardmen, Skavens, Tomb Kings, Vampire Coast, and High Elves; expanding the campaign by adding the continents of Lustria and Ulthuan; and with additional gameplay features and mechanics.
    • Medieval II: Total War - 2006 (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS) Without a doubt, the most well-known game in the franchise, despite being 16 years old now, never ceases to amaze me.
    • Shogun 2 (2011) Shogun 2 has consistently remained my favorite entry into the entire Total War series. Being able to manually aim your cannons – and even Gatling guns in the Fall of the Samurai expansion – there’s nothing better in a TW game.
    • Rome 2 (2013) Before you get the pitchforks and torches, hear me out. Rome 2 might have launched with more than its fair share of problems, but it’s actually really solid now.
    • Warhammer 2 (2017) Warhammer 2 was a huge improvement on the first. It offered a way bigger map and way more factions to choose from. But, the overall gameplay didn’t seem to change a whole lot – not that it really should have, mind you.
    • Napoleon (2010) Napoleon basically took what everyone disliked about Empires, and made it a little better. It takes place during the French Revolutionary War period and follows Napoleon’s Italian and Egyptian campaigns right up to the Battle of Waterloo.

  4. Jan 4, 2024 · Total War Saga: Troy’s biggest offense is playing it too safe in regards to its campaign difficulty, variety, and desire (or lack thereof) to innovate on the series formula. While this makes it a great starting point for new players who will appreciate Troy’s vibrant graphics and sleek UI, longtime fans are more likely to scoff at its ...
