Learn about the GIA color grading scale and how fluorescence and metal settings can impact the appearance of diamond colors. Since the Four Cs aren't as distinct as they may seem, we'll also recommend the combinations of color, clarity, cut, and carat to look for when buying a diamond.
Aug 30, 2024 · The “best” diamond color grade (for “white” or colorless diamonds) is a D grade. This is the top of the diamond color scale, indicating the diamond is completely colorless, even when viewed under intense magnification.
A diamond is considered colorless if it has a D, E, or F rating. Moving down the scale, a diamond with a G-J would be considered “near colorless” and may give off a slight hint, while a diamond with a K-M grade, considered “faint,” would show noticeable color.
Jul 8, 2015 · The 23 color grades on the GIA Color Scale (or diamond color chart) are subdivided into five subcategories, which are: colorless (D-F); near colorless (G-J); faint (K-M); very light (N-R); and light (S-Z). Each letter grade has a clearly defined narrow range of color appearance.
D, E, and F are colorless grades. D and E-colored diamonds have virtually no color, and F diamonds have a nearly undetectable amount of color that shows only in the face-down position (when the diamond is viewed from the bottom). These icy-white diamonds are the rarest and the highest quality in color.
The official GIA diamond color scale (or diamond color chart) measures the color hue of diamonds on a spectrum of D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown shade). Colorless (D, E, F)
Colorless diamonds are diamonds with a D, E, or F color grade. D color diamonds are the highest diamond color grade. They have no visible color, even when inspected under magnification. E and F color diamonds show the faintest hint of color under magnification. All colorless diamonds appear completely colorless to the naked eye.
