You should not be worrying about which champion is good. You should focus on building general League skills instead. Play what you like, as long as you're playing as intended (ie. Vex mid instead of AD vex jungle) you're gonna be fine, even if it's a weak pick ATM or against certain matchups.
If I ever feel like it would be a long game I go gathering storm. With the full build, which means Ludens, magic pen boots, Shadowflame, Void Staff, Rabadon's, Zonya's, you should be able to one shot squishies even if they have some defensive measures like maw or mr boots.
