In the U.S. and in France, school starts with compulsory kindergarten, then elementary school, middle school, high school, and higher education. In the US though, it is relatively straightforward, with 1st grade, 2nd grade, up to 12th grade, and graduation.
The second level begins at the age of 11 in middle school and the students go through the classes of 6ème, 5ème, 4ème, and 3ème when they are about 14 years old (equivalent to classes 6-9 in an Indian context). They must then pass an exam; the brevet des collèges which is mandatory to enter high school i.e. le lycée.
