The historian Giuseppe Casarrubea, son of one of the victims of Giuliano, compiled material to demonstrate that the body buried as Giuliano belonged to someone else. On 15 October 2010, the Public Prosecutor's Office in Palermo decided to exhume the body and compare its DNA with living relatives of Giuliano.
As a result the Italian government dispatched an additional 1000 troops to Western Sicily, with all troops under the command of Colonel Ugo Luca, perhaps Italy's most distinguished and capable military leader. On July 5, 1950, Giuliano was shot in Castelvetrano.
Nov 20, 2012 · Giuliano was gunned down in a courtyard in Castelvetrano, Sicily by the police, supposedly as he was resisting arrest. However, a journalist investigating the death found out that the shootout was staged and that Giuliano had been betrayed.
As these strange events were revealed, more people began to devise conspiracy theories about Giuliano’s death. One was that Giuliano had faked his death and possibly fled to the United States. The theorists argue that it is not Giuliano who is buried in the grave as the body is far too short.
Nov 9, 2011 · In an attempt to put these rumors to rest, the official grave of Giuliano was exhumed in 2010 for DNA testing. Much to Sicily’s surprise, the testing wasn’t even necessary in the first place because the local coroner confirmed that the skeleton in the grave was far too short to be Salvatore Giuliano .
Oct 30, 2010 · Some have even alleged that Giuliano escaped a police dragnet and the body of a slain lookalike was buried in his place in Montelepre cemetery in the rugged hills south of Palermo.
