When the First World War broke out, Captain Holland was posted back to Europe and took part in the battle for Neuve-Chapelle, where he was killed by a German sniper on 9 May 1915, during the Battle of Festubert. He is buried at Street Vaast Post Military Cemetery, Richebourg-l"Avoué.
At first he was buried below the nearby factory wall but later the Germans re-buried him at Hautrage. Major Holland was often said to be the first artillery officer killed in the Great War and a search of the CWGC database has confirmed that this was indeed the case.
