- La Laguna. Best for historic strolls. La Laguna is a knockout. The former Tenerife capital has a staggeringly well-preserved, Unesco-listed historic center that brims with churches, convents, and pastel-painted colonial mansions that pop in bright shades of blue, lemon, green, violet, and orange – all topped off by a fine cathedral.
- Parque Nacional del Teide. Best for volcanic landscapes. All eyes are on Teide from the moment you fly into the island. Seen from the plane, this perfectly-etched volcano – Spain’s highest peak at 3715m (12,180ft) – seems to swallow the island whole.
- La Orotava. Best for Canarian tradition and wine tasting. Winging you back to the early days of Spanish colonization, 16th-century La Orotava sits pretty in a lush valley to the island’s mountainous north, with Teide looming on the horizon.
- Garachico. Best for old-school Canary charm. Ask locals for a slice of genuine Canarian life and they will likely direct you toward Garachico on the north coast.
- Discover Canarian flavors at Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África. Settle into Tenerife life at Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África, the capital’s fresh produce market.
- Get creative at Santa Cruz’s Tenerife Espacio de las Artes. Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron – in collaboration with Canarian Virgilio Gutiérrez – are behind the boundary-pushing design of Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, the island’s unmissable art gallery housed in a bold concrete-clad building inspired by the surrounding volcanic landscapes.
- Hike through age-old laurel forests in the Anaga mountains. Welcome to the oldest (and arguably most spectacular) part of the island. Shrouded in mist and ancient laurisilva (laurel forest), the isolated Anaga mountains stretch across the northeasternmost tip of Tenerife, protected as both the 144-sq-km (56-sq-mile) Parque Rural de Anaga and, since 2015, as a Unesco Biosphere Reserve.
- Cool off in the Atlantic sea pools. One of Tenerife’s greatest joys are its twinkling natural sea pools, where you can join the tinerfeños for a dip in the emerald Atlantic.
- Views all around at Mount Teide. Tenerife is dominated by Mount Teide, a dormant volcano that is Spain's tallest peak. The peak is surrounded by a stunning national park.
- Stroll atop Los Gigantes. Some of the most dramatic cliff faces you’ll see, anywhere. Why go? Tenerife’s Acantilados de Los Gigantes or ‘Cliffs of the Giants’ have an appropriately grand name: these vast vertical walls of basalt are a product of the Canaries’ volcanic landscape – and, no matter how you view them, they’re totally spectacular.
- Get lost in quirky ARTlandya. A quirky museum near Santa Cruz de Tenerife, ARTlandya is home to a collection of over 600 dolls and teddy bears.
- Aquatic thrills at Siam Park. The self-described 'most spectacular water attraction in Europe', this giant water park features the biggest collection of Thai-themed buildings outside Thailand.

Tenerife is the striking grande dame in the archipelago family. Attracting over six million visitors a year, the island’s most famous southern resorts offer Brit-infused revelry and clubbing, combined with white sandy beaches and all-inclusive resorts.
