The Xingu River Basin is the fourth largest tributary basin in the Amazon and with 507,000 km 2 and it is nearly the size of France. Two-thirds of the Basin is in the state of Pará; the remaining one-third is in the state of Mato Grosso.
For me, this place is the Xingu (pronounced shin-goo), the most incredible, diverse, dynamic river in South America. Yet, it is threatened by the never-ending destruction of the Mato Grosso by industrial agriculture, deforestation, gold mining, and one of the world’s largest hydroelectric projects.
