Get your guide. Although it is named for Ashby-de-la-Zouch, the canal never reached the town. It winds peacefully through the countryside for almost the whole of its 22-mile length. Hedgerows and reeds add to a green landscape, rich in wildlife, including herons, kingfishers and moorhens.

Ashby Canal. The currently navigable part of the Ashby Canal runs from the Coventry Canal at Marston Junction to Snarestone near Ashby-de-la-Zouch. The canal originally extended a further 8 miles to Moira; this section is now being restored.
The brook runs from north of Ashby de la Zouch to the river Mease, just east of the canal crossing. The brook is designated a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), which gives it a high degree of protection for its wildlife interest. The Ashby Canal is currently being restored.

31 miles of lock free rural cruising make the Ashby an ideal place for canal novices. It can be a bit shollow in places but there is a lot to see along its length with the town of Market Bosworth a mile away, including the battle field of Richard the third fame.
