Dec 11, 2023 · In the cemetery outside Old First Congregational Church in Bennington, Vermont, among other stone markers that “doubtless bear names that the mosses mar,” is a long, rectangular gravestone embossed with seven names: those of poet Robert Lee Frost; his wife, Elinor Miriam White; and five of their six children.
Robert Lee Frost (March 26, 1874 – January 29, 1963) was born in San Francisco to William Prescott Frost Jr. and Isabelle Moodie. His father, a hustling journalist, died in 1885, leaving his widow and two children with hardly enough money to make it back to Lawrence, Massachusetts.
He is buried next to his wife and son in a plot which he had purchased in 1940. (He had previously lived at Shaftsbury near to Bennington.) Between 1912 and 1915 Frost lived in England with his wife and family and met many of the Georgian Poets.
When Frost's father died in 1884, his will requested that he be buried in New England. His wife and two children, Robert and Jeanie, went east for the funeral. Lacking funds to return to California, they settled in Salem, Massachusetts, where his grandfather had offered them a home.
