Puna is one of the 9 districts of Hawaii County on the Island of Hawaiʻi (Big Island; County of Hawaiʻi). It is located on the windward side (east side) of the island and shares borders with South Hilo district in the north and Kaʻū district in the west. [1]
Puna is a massive, diverse region that provides easy access to the frequent lava activity of the Big Island as well as incredible sightseeing and hiking. We've put together a guide for those visiting Puna Hawaii.
- Isaac Hale Beach Park & Pohoiki Black Sand Beach. Just about a mile down the road from Ahalanui at the junction of Highway 137 and Pohoiki Road in Puna is one of the most popular beaches in the area.
- Lava Tree State Park. A loop trail will guide you through an impressive jungle of vining plants, orchids, and bamboo. Along the trail are bulbous black stumps partially covered in small green plants.
- Kalapana. Sometimes it is very easy to forget amid the vast beauty of the Big Island that deep below the surface a primal force is at work.
- 'New' Kaimu Black Sand Beach. In 1990, a river of lava flowed from the volcano, reaching the shoreline, burying the original Kaimu Beach under 50-70 feet of lava and destroying the entire community of Kalapana and nearby subdivisions that were in its fiery, molten path.
This friendly, small town is the gateway to the Waipiʻo Valley, and home to cute local shops and restaurants. Located on the northern Hāmākua Coast, the sacred Waipiʻo Valley was the boyhood home of King Kamehameha I and an important center for political and religious life in Hawaiʻi.
- Pāhoa. Tucked into the eastern corner of the Big Island and in the heart of the Puna district is the vibrant and colorful little town of Pāhoa. In your haste to venture on into lower Puna and the areas affected by the 2018 LERZ eruption, you might think to simply pass right through, but you’d be far better served to spend some time here wandering through the quirky collection of shops, museums and galleries that line the main street, or to stop for coffee or a meal in one of its numerous cafes and eateries.
- The Painted Church. At the end of the main street in Pahoa, you can continue south about 10 mins on Highway 130 to the Star of the Sea Painted Church (colloquially just the Painted Church).
- Kalapana. The village of Kalapana was once one of the most picturesque spots in the Hawaiian Islands. Oozing with old-Hawaii charm, an off the beaten track feel and a healthy collection of local resident artists, it attracted many visitors to the shores of its famous Kamoamoa Beach and ancient Hawaiian Queen’s Baths.
- Kaimū and Uncle Robert’s. Backtracking a bit will bring you to the turnoff for Kaimū the small neighboring town that was destroyed by the eruption in 1990.
Puna is located on the easternmost tip of the Big Island of Hawaii, United States. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east and encompasses the southeastern side of the island, including a portion of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
