Point Sur Lighthouse is a lightstation at Point Sur 24.6 miles (39.6 km) south of Monterey, California at the peak of the 361-foot (110 m) rock at the head of the point. It was established in 1889 and is part of Point Sur State Historic Park .
Sur lighthouse and its supporting lightstation buildings, now a California State Historic Park, stand atop a dramatic volcanic rock just off-shore in Big Sur, California. This historic aid-to-navigation has a modern aero-beacon which still guides ships along the treacherous Central California Coast.
The Lighthouse Service was absorbed into the Coast Guard in 1939, and Point Sur Lighthouse became the property of the Coast Guard. The lightstation was automated in the late 1960s, and in 1974 ceased to have a light keeper. Point Sur State Historic Park was established in 1986.

Then on to the Barn for some hearty snacks. The walk includes a 300' rise in elevation and stairs of 38 and 61 steps.

Oct 1, 2024 · Until 1974, lighthouse keepers lived on Point Sur with their families full-time; today, the lights are automated and serviced by the U.S. Coast Guard. It's located about 21 miles south of the small coastal town Carmel-by-the-Sea. On Saturdays, Sundays, and Wednesdays, you can take a three-hour, docent-led tour of the historic site.
