Hundreds of schools were established in East Texas before the Civil War. Lon Morris College outlasted them all until it closed its doors in 2012. The college had its beginnings in the early 1850s, as a Masonic School located in the community of New Danville, in Rusk County.
In fall 1909 the school moved into its new $60,000 home at 800 College Avenue. The largest building in Jacksonville, it contained “classrooms, practice rooms, laboratories” with a library on the first floor and an auditorium on the second floor. Its distinctive twin towers made it a symbol of the school.

Aug 16, 2009 · This month marks its 100th anniversary as a junior college in its current location. However, as a chartered institution, the college can be traced back to 1854 with the establishment of the New Danville Masonic Female Academy in the Kilgore area.
