Mr. Eckert was married to Judith Hahn (daughter of Dr. John Hahn, of New Hanover township, Montgomery county, a graduate physician of the University of Pennsylvania, member of Congress from 1815-17, and a lineal descendant of Philip Hahn, who emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1729).
His remains were buried in the graveyard connected with Hain's Church. Col. Valentine Eckert, whose sketch appears in this publication, was an elder brother.

He was originally buried on the Anzac Ridge just north of Polygon Wood, but his remains were recovered and reburied in Aeroplane Cemetery in 1924. John is buried at Aeroplane Cemetery, Ieper.
