  5. Traught Beach is also a popular spot for birdwatching, as it lies in a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) called the Galway Bay Complex, which hosts a variety of waterfowl and marine life. The beach is especially known for its waterfowl, such as ducks, geese, swans and waders, which can be observed from the shore or from the nearby bird hide.

  6. Inner Galway Bay SPA (4031) overlaps the SAC. Galway Bay Complex SAC, while dominated by marine and brackish habitats, also contains wetland areas adjacent to the coast. A number of turlough-like wetlands are known to occur, to the south and south-east of the bay, associated with the Burren limestone.
