Camberwell (/ ˈ k æ m b ər w ɛ l / KAM-bər-wel) is an area of South London, England, in the London Borough of Southwark, 2 + 3 ⁄ 4 miles (4.5 kilometres) southeast of Charing Cross. Camberwell was first a village associated with the church of St Giles and a common of which Goose Green is a remnant.
1748 Camberwell Hall opened on Grove Lane as the assembly room for the Camberwell Tea Gardens, which included extensive gardens. Became a popular venue for balls and concerts for the middle classes. 1769 Blackfriars bridge opened. It linked Camberwell to the City and led to much new building.
Today, Camberwell has become well and truly part of London – an inner-city area with a diverse population. Elegant Georgian properties sit alongside post-war estates, giving the place its eclectic character.
