Being at the Argentina–Paraguay border, Asunción is located between the parallels 25° 15' and 25° 20' of south latitude and between the meridians 57° 40' and 57° 30' of west longitude. The city sits on the left bank of the Paraguay River, almost at the confluence of this river with the River Pilcomayo.

The city lies 175 feet (53 metres) above sea level. The city was so named when a stockade was completed there on the Feast of the Assumption (August 15) in 1537.
Located where the Pilcomayo River joins the Paraguay River, it served as a gateway to the South American heartland, and was thus crucial to Spain as it colonized the continent. As the city developed along the river bank, fertile land supported the growing population and the city prospered.
Asunción is the capital and largest city of Paraguay. Jan 24, 2020 · Asunción is located in the southwestern portion of Paraguay, on the left bank of the Paraguay River. The Spanish word “Asunción” means “assumption” and refers to the Assumption of Mary.
The city is located on the left bank of the Paraguay River near its confluence with the Pilcomayo River, at the border to Argentina. In 1562 the city became the center of the 'Giant Province of the Indies' (Provincia Gigante de Indias), a very large colonial province of Spain , comprising parts of today Brazil , Paraguay and northeastern Argentina.
