Urban comes from Latin "urbanus" an adjectif of "urbs". Urbanus meant derivatively 'civilized', 'polished', 'refined. "urbs" is of unknown origin. In Partridge's dictionary he suggests that "urbs" is a contraction of "uerb" which is the root of latin "uertere" to turn.
