Moonfleet. Written by John Meade Falkner Review by Henriette Gyland. This is a first-rate adventure story, beautifully set in an 18th-century Dorset fishing community, with tales of skulduggery, smuggling, hidden treasure, greed, treachery, and true love: all the ingredients for a good old yarn.
Moonfleet is the name of the village where the young orphan John Trenchard lives with his aunt, a strict and humourless individual who barely tolerates his presence. Falkner used the local geography of Dorset, including Carisbrooke Castle, only changing some of the place names.

Feb 23, 2022 · Moonfleet is based on East Fleet in Dorset, near Chesil Beach. 'The Snout' headland in the book is Portland Bill. The Mohunes were a real family - Maximillion Mohune built Fleet House in 1603 - it's now the Moonfleet Manor Hotel.
