Though many Ryūkyūans have migrated to other parts of Japan, and in particular Tokyo, the majority live in Okinawa Prefecture, which includes most islands in the Ryūkyū archipelago.
Although officially unrecognized, Ryukyuans constitute the largest ethnolinguistic minority group in Japan, with more than 1.8 million living in the Okinawa Prefecture alone. Ryukyuans inhabit the Amami Islands of Kagoshima Prefecture as well, and have contributed to a considerable Ryukyuan diaspora.
The northernmost inhabited island is Iheya, and the southernmost island is Hateruma. Yonaguni, the westernmost island, is actually closer to Taiwan than mainland Japan. The islands are well connected by air and sea, making it easy to get around Okinawa.
