Story. The poem begins as an old sorcerer departs his workshop, leaving his apprentice with chores to perform. Tired of fetching water by pail, the apprentice enchants a broom to do the work for him, using magic in which he is not fully trained.

While Thompson and other animators worked on Mickey—bringing a UCLA athlete in to model for Mickey's motions as the mouse ran and jumped through his flooding castle—Bill Tytla developed the Sorcerer himself.
The film is named after The Sorcerer's Apprentice segment in Disney's Fantasia (with one scene being an extensive reference to it), which in turn is based on the late 1890s symphonic poem of the same name by Paul Dukas and the 1797 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ballad of the same name.
Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) is a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina). Balthazar can't do it alone, so he recruits Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel), a seemingly average guy who demonstrates hidden potential, as his reluctant protégé.
