On a song collecting journey in 1908, budding folklorist John Avery Lomax learned it as "A Home on the Range" from an African American saloonkeeper in San Antonio, Texas. His informant told him that he heard it on the cattle drives of the 1880s.
Higley's friend Daniel Kelley, a Civil War veteran who lived in the Sunflower State for a time, wrote the music. Both Higley and Kelley moved on to greener pastures after writing it. Higley eventually landed in Oklahoma, while Kelley made Iowa his home.
The lyrics to "Home on the Range" were first published as a poem in the Smith County Pioneer in 1872 under the title "My Western Home". [5] That home is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Home on the Range Cabin .
