Born in Dundee, Laing began acting at a young age, joining an Arbroath theatre company, performing there in productions such as Trainspotting, portraying the character of Renton. He studied Drama at Fife College.
Robin Laing began his acting journey over thirty years ago in Poorboy's spiritual home of Arbroath when he joined the Angus Children's Theatre. Over time he moved down the coast to Carnoustie, then Dundee and finally Fife, all the while learning his trade.

Hailing from the Central Lowlands of Scotland, the actor Robin Laing was a member of the Carnoustie Theatre Club, which produced several famous alumni, including the comedian Alan Cumming. After high school, Laing went on to study theater and drama at Fife College.
