He grew up in a pub and when he was little, would go into the bar, stand on a table and tell stories about a character he’d made up called Big Dumb Tackle. He wore short trousers until he was fifteen. He thinks the character, Willy, is based on his own childhood.

Childhood. Anthony Browne was born and raised in Sheffield. He lived with his parents, Jack and Doris, and his big brother, Michael. Young Anthony Browne began storytelling by entertaining his parents’ customers at their pub, The Red Lion, with imaginative tales that he’d made up himself.
He was born in Sheffield in 1946, and grew up in Yorkshire. He studied graphic design at Leeds College of Art and first worked as an illustrator for medical textbooks, then as a greeting card designer. His popular book, Gorilla (1983) started out as a picture designed for a birthday card.

Anthony was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire in 1946 and grew up near Halifax. Inspired by his father, he was interested in art and drawing from an early age. When he left school, Anthony attended Leeds Art College, where he graduated with a graphic arts degree in 1967.
