Alfred Augustus Glendening Snr. (b. 25th July 1940 Hampton on Thames – d. 11 Dec 1921, Deptford). From a humble background, he first worked as a railway clerk before devoting his life to landscape painting. He became one of the most popular Victorian landscape artists, painting realistic British Isles scenes.
Born in Hampton on Thames, London, Glendening was raised in an area popular with Victorian artists. The River, with its zig-zagging steamboats and silvery waters, providing ample inspiration for a young impressionable mind.
Although his paintings show a tranquil and unspoiled landscape, his environment was rapidly being transformed by social, scientific, and industrial developments, while advances in transport, photography, and other technical discoveries undoubtedly influenced him and his fellow painters.

Glendening particularly enjoyed painting views of the Thames, Surrey and Sussex in the Southern Counties, and in the Scottish Highlands where he enjoyed painting dramatic landscapes with lochs and cattle. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, British Institution and Suffolk Street between 1865 and 1903.
