The main gate of "Slade Prison" was filmed at The Gate House, St Albans, Hertfordshire. This was was originally built as the town jail, back in the Victorian era. It was being used as a council works depot at the time Porridge was filmed.
Jul 23, 2024 · The historic look of the building would have been a draw to the filmmakers, much like with Marylebone station. The interiors were filmed at another former prison, Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin, which is now a museum. Scenes in The Italian Job were also filmed at Kilmainham in the 1960s.
Filming took place over November and December 2020, with very strict COVID restrictions in place, which meant no one other than BBC authorised personnel/actors/staff could enter the prison. The BBC even lost Sean Bean for a few days after a COVID contact scare.
