History. Trap shooting was originally developed, in part, to augment bird hunting and to provide a method of practice for bird hunters. Use of targets was introduced as a replacement for live pigeon-shooting. Indeed, one of the names for the targets used in shooting games is clay pigeons.
Trapshooting originated in England in the late 18th century when marksmen, to improve their hunting skills, shot at live pigeons released from cages or box traps. The practice was outlawed or died out in the late 19th century when various inanimate objects were substituted as targets, culminating with the invention of the modern disk.
