The Back of Beyond (1954) - The later film documentary Last Mail from Birdsville: The Story of Tom Kruse (2001) traces the recovery of the badly deteriorated 1936 Leyland Badger truck seen in this film from the desert near Birdsville in 1986, its painstaking three-year restoration from 1996, and the final mail run re-enactment down the Birdsville Track in 1999.
Heyer found his subject through dramatising the real-life Birdsville track mail-run, where hardy souls eek out an existence amid an isolated, alien environment which (as intoned through Brennan's forced and stock but wonderfully flavoursome narration) is dryly unforgiving.
