Our History old. Exeter School traces its origins from the opening of the Exeter Free Grammar School on 1 August 1633. This became the city’s school attended mainly by the sons of those awarded freeman status and, although its teachers were licensed by the Bishop of Exeter, in all other respects the Exeter Chamber controlled it.

Mar 22, 2024 · The school’s foundations go back to the thirteenth century, when Gilbert and John Long, merchants in the city, founded St John’s Hospital on the site of the old Church of St John the Baptist, near the East Gate of Exeter in 1238.
The school was founded on the historic estate of Mount Radford in 1826. [1] [2] Mr W. E. Vine, the eldest son of the founder, first joined his father at the school, at the age of seventeen. He succeeded his father as headmaster in 1901, and held office until 1916 when he was invited to become the director of the Missionary Society in Bath.
The Exeter School Archive. Exeter School has an archive of records and artefacts relating to the school’s history which is housed in the Exonian Centre. The archive includes copies of the school magazine, The Exonian, since its first publication in the nineteenth century, an extensive photo collection and many other fascinating artefacts.
