The idea for restoring St Davids Cathedral had been planted much earlier, in the 1780s and 1790s during the Gothic revival. The Gothic revival ideal was that a place of worship should be either built in the Gothic style or restored to its medieval appearance.
The present cathedral was begun in 1181 and completed not long after. Problems beset the new building and the community in its infancy: the collapse of the new tower in 1220 and earthquake damage in 1247/48. Bishops Palace as it appears today.

Between 645 and 1097, St Davids was repeatedly attacked, among others by the Vikings, but after some time, the monks always returned and rebuilt the monastery. During the raids two bishops were killed by the attackers: Moregenau in 999 and Abraham in 1080.
The cathedral organ was built by the renowned Henry Willis in 1883 and rebuilt twice in the 20th century. The cathedral bells were removed from the tower to Porth y Twr in 1730 to avoid another tower collapse. Two new bells were donated by the American Friends of St Davids Cathedral in 2001.
The west front was given its present form by Sir George Gilbert Scott between 1862 and 1878. Jun 27, 2024 · Work continued on the cathedral over several centuries. The square central tower, which collapsed in 1220, was soon rebuilt. The Lady Chapel was constructed between 1328 and 1347, and the upper portions of the nave and second stage of the tower date from the 15th century.
