In 1914, German American immigrant Carl Laemmle bought the Taylor Ranch in the San Fernando Valley and founded Universal City as a gigantic studio with a zoo, its own police and mayor and Native Americans living on the premises.
When the investors called their option in 1936, Standard Capital acquired Laemmle's interest in the company for $4.1 million, ending the Laemmle era at Universal. Renamed New Universal, the company consolidated its resources by reducing production and closing European operations.
The studio is renamed ‘New Universal Studios’. Showboat is released less than 2 months after Standard Capital takes control, and is a big box-office success. The Laemmle family can only watch from the sidelines.
Early years. Universal Studios was formed in 1924 by Jules Stein and William R. Goodheart, Jr., as Music Corporation of America, a music booking agency based in Chicago, Illinois. MCA helped pioneer modern practices of touring bands and name acts.

On December 9, 1996, MCA was reincorporated and renamed Universal Studios, Inc., and retained ownership of the Universal Pictures film studio. In December 2000, French company Vivendi acquired Seagram, renaming itself Vivendi Universal; the deal was closed in January 2001.
In 1998, USA Networks acquired Universal's TV studios and renamed them Studios USA. Universal bought back USA's cable and studio holdings in 2002, hence returning the Universal Television name. Universal was acquired by the French company Vivendi (becoming Vivendi Universal) in June 2000.
