Feb 9, 2021 · On October 16, 1927, crews broke ground on the “Stone Mountain Memorial Drive.” The groundbreaking was quite the affair, led by the Stone Mountain Memorial Association. This portion of the route was the extension from Avondale Estates to Stone Mountain.
The carving on the side of Stone Mountain is the largest Confederate monument in the world. The mountain is engraved with a sculpture of well-known people from the Confederacy: Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate states, and generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson.
In 1941, segregationist Governor Eugene Talmadge formed the Stone Mountain Memorial Association (SMMA) to continue work on the memorial, but the project was delayed once again by the United States' entry into World War II (1941–45).
May 25, 2021 · White supremacy also characterized the spirit of manifest destiny that obscured Native presence and history in North America. Under the leadership of Helen Plane, the United Daughters of the Confederacy originally commissioned a relief sculpture and memorial park on the site in 1915.
Sep 27, 2021 · Stone Mountain Park officially opened on April 14, 1965, purposefully 100 years to the day after Lincoln’s assassination. Sculptor Roy Faulkner finally completed the carving in 1972. Faulkner opened the Stone Mountain Carving Museum in 1985, but it was closed shortly after, and they moved the extensive archival collection to Emory University.
